Teenage Mutants have been putting up some absolutely killer tracks in the past couple months that show a tremendous proficiency in style and production capability well past their age, as well as a unique sound that fully personifies the current emergence of cross-genre, unclassifiable dance music worldwide. They’ve been playing a number of nights around Germany showcasing their skillful combination of afrobeat, tropical and heavy electro sounds, and have caught the ear of such big name DJ’s as Malente, Fukkk Offf and Stupid Fresh. Their track Gringo was recently featured in my June Top 10 and I was so impressed that I thought a proper interview was more than due.
Be sure to check out their recent mixtape and bonus tracks below, but first, it is my incredible honor to introduce Teenage Mutants:
First off, the basics; names, ages, hometowns and how long have you guys been DJ’ing / producing separately or as a duo?
Teenage Mutants is an electronic music project founded by Kristian Samujlo (21) and Pascal Klank (19). We live in Mainz. 20 km away from Frankfurt. I started DJ’ing in 2002 and Paco in 2004 (separately), but in the same club (Safahi Lounge, Mainz). In 2005 we started to produce music.
What are some of the first tracks or DJ’s that you heard that helped to inspire and influence the music that you are making now?
The biggest influence was Alter Ego. This artist has shown us that we do not always [have to] follow the mainstream to have success. The message was: “You have to follow new paths”…
And that’s what we did.
What are some non dance tracks or genres that you grew up on or are still into today?
We love the 80’s!
Artists like Level 42, Cutting Crew and Hall & Oates.
This decade affected us [very much]. The best music comes from this time.
What kind of software, hardware or other gear do you guys use when you’re producing?
At the moment we use Ableton Live and Logic. We also use some nice Synthies from Korg, but mostly it’s all digital.
You guys did a remix for Adana Twins with Frag Maddin and most recently for Azzido Da Bass, are there some other remixes / collaborations that we can look forward to in the near future?
The next big remix is for Röyksopp. It will be ready in 2 weeks and there will [also] be a remix for Noize Generation. After that we will work on our third EP.
What are some of the original releases that you guys have coming up and what other producers are going to be doing remixes of your stuff?
The first release will be on Kiez Beats in August. The EP is called Africa…Boombasa! with remixes from Stupid Fresh and Dirty Disco Youth. It’s a mix between afrobeats & heavy electro.
The third release is on a very very popular label… but unfortunately we still have to be silent .
You’ve been playing a bunch of shows around Germany, and more to come in the next couple months, how has the response been so far and are you planning any other dates in Europe or the U.S. in the near future?
There are very beautiful experiences [happening] at the moment. Travelling is a lot of fun! Playing in the U.S. would be incredible, but also Europe would be great!
What have been some of the stand out parties, crowds or sound systems that you’ve played so far? Any crazy DJ or afterparty stories to tell?
There is much to tell! Germany is so sick! One DJ peed under the desk, because he [didn't want] to miss a moment of the party. At the same party we saw a couple doing some oral games on the dancefloor…CRAZY!
How is the scene around Mainz and other German cities as far as legitimate dance music / nights? Are there a lot of weekly parties that are playing newer dance music and how would you guys say the general population of younger people in Germany feel about newer, more mixed genre dance music like the kind that you guys are playing / producing?
The larger the city is the more styles merge with each other. Mainz has no real dance music scene at the moment. Four times a year we do a party with guests such as Malente, Fukkk Offf and Dada Life.
There is only one club doing [electronic music every Friday], but in such a boring way you can’t dance….
In big cities like Hamburg or Berlin the kids want techno and they get it most [of] the time!
What are your top 10 tracks to play out that get the party moving?
10. Adana Twins – Heliumcowboy (Frag Maddin & Teenage Mutants Remix)
9. Renaissance Man – Babbadabba (Original Mix)
8. Zombie Disco Squad – Vie! (Original Mix)
7. Urban Delights – Break It All Down (The Coconut Wireless Remix)

4. Riva Starr – Dance Me (Oliver $ Dub)
3. The Coconut Wireless – Vous Etes Assis (Original Mix)
2. Stupid Fresh – Do The Dog (Original Mix)

Who are some other younger German producers / DJ’s that we should keep an eye on?
